Week 1 Recap

1 week down, 3.143 weeks to go! The first week wasn’t easy, but honestly it was easier than I remembered from the previous rounds. This is likely because we knew better what to expect. What is definitely the same is how much of our time we are spending in the kitchen, and it is a lot! Don’t tell my husband, but I’m actually starting to enjoy cooking. Weekends are always the hardest during whole30, but they are a good reminder that we need hobbies that don’t involve spending money, drinking, and eating.

How do we feel?

I feel pretty great, I’ve had some low energy levels but overall I’ve been able to make it through workouts and my days about normal. Honestly, I do already feel significantly slimmer than just a week ago. I feel more confident already, and I feel motivated to get through the next few weeks. On the other hand, I would have loved to go out and have a margarita, chips and queso after church this morning. Or even snack on pita chips and hummus at home all afternoon!

Who’s the guilty party?

P is hanging in there. This whole thing is less exciting for him, but he is being so helpful during our many hours in the kitchen. Luckily, he doesn’t get as hangry as me because he has reported multiple times the he is always hungry. He has noticed some swelling around his mouth which according to our doctor friend Google is likely a case of Oral Allergy Syndrome (OAS). We are leaning toward this being due to the fact he was averaging 2 bananas and 1 avocado a day or maybe from the compliant hot sauce he is literally putting on everything. We are starting by toning down on the bananas and avocados. This has been rough since these were his Whole30 go-to’s.

Things we loved from week 1

  • Trader Joe’s – we had only been once to just check it out. This week we did a majority of our shopping there and we think we understand the rave. BUY YOUR COCONUT AMINOS HERE. So cheap compared to everywhere else. We bought 4 bottles!
  • Cassava Flour tortillas – TACOS, need I say more?
  • Zoe’s Kitchen W30 approved menu – This was a great break from cooking and SO delicious.
  • Pre-cooked breakfast – My baking sheet got me through the week, and it was good!!
  • Larabars – We are now buying these by the box.
  • Days without cooking – these are rare during W30, cherish them.
  • Bacon – stumbled upon some compliant bacon, almost cleared the shelf.
  • Our pellet smoker – we didn’t have this during our last rounds and it’s made cooking in bulk on the weekends so easy and fun!
  • Feeling slimmer in just 8 days 🙂 – I know, I know it’s not about losing weight BUT it is about feeling better and we both feel better when we lose a little weight!
  • Spindrift Sparkling Water – we bought the half tea & half lemon flavor which was perfect replacement for P’s usual Arnold Palmer fix.
  • Paleo Running Momma. I added two of her recipes she featured on Whole30 Recipes Instagram to our menu for Week 2!
Pre-made breakfast for week 2 recipe from Paleo Running Momma.

This we didn’t love (or could do better)

  • Nori sheets – yuck. Sorry if people like these, but I added them to some zoodles and I made this week and I did not enjoy them.
  • Forgetting my lunch – on Monday I’m bringing two lunches in case this happens again.
  • Trying to find compliant ingredients – we went to three different grocery stores trying to find Arrowroot Flour and didn’t find it. I guess this is what we get for trying to avoid Whole Foods (the store).

Financial Update

It’s a good thing we are motivated to save some money because we found out this weekend that we are in the market for a new (to us) car. This is an expense we knew would be coming our way sooner rather than later with two cars with over 180,000 miles. We were hoping to make it through Junkless June without worrying about this but no such luck. The update from the mechanic when we went in for an oil change and tire rotation was, “if you were waiting for the wheels to fall off this thing you are pretty close.” So, it is time and like any good FI-focused family we are in search for a gently used car we can afford to pay cash for.

Other than that, no major slip-ups on the financial challenge. Our cheap entertainment of the week was attending a AAA baseball game while enjoying a nice bag of sunflower seeds! This was a nice night out of the house for a total cost of $25. We also went to the dog park, went swimming at the gym, and played a board game at no added cost to the weekend. Oh, and did I mention we did a lot of cooking and cleaning in the kitchen? Now off to spend the rest of the day meal prepping and online car shopping!

Days 5-6

Combined updates for days 5 and 6 because I was too tired to write on day 5 and we didn’t have much to update you on other than how tired we were. I was literally in bed by 7:45 and dead asleep by 9 pm.

Day 6 wasn’t as bad. I had a slight hiccup at work – I forgot my lunch! We had a catered lunch with a salad I picked the cheese and croutons off of and found some chicken I didn’t eat last week. Whew, that could have been much worse. I’m thinking next week I’ll bring a back-up lunch in case that happens again.

After work I went to a boot camp class – felt a little fatigued but I made it through. P went to spin class and also reported slight fatigue. Gym time was followed by the most exciting part of the day, TACOS!! Y’all if you’re trying to get through Whole30, cook things you are excited about. We found these grain free tortillas at Whole Foods Paycheck last weekend. So tonight we made barbacoa tacos (from the Whole30 slow cooker book) with a side of baked plantains. YUM YUM YUM.

Tomorrow I’ll go grocery shopping since I have the day off. We are still doing great on the financial cleanse, but it’s pretty easy during the weekdays. We are still trying to decide what cheap or free entertainment to check out this weekend. Please share any favorite Whole30 recipes and favorite cheap/free weekend activities!

Day 4 –

Whew – this is getting real. I started the day being greeted by two donut boxes ensuring me that I do in fact deserve a donut. Well, not today donut box, not today!

How was Day 4?It was alright. I only drank two cups of black coffee to get through work today. I felt great most of the morning, but around 11 AM that hangover I kept hearing about kicked in. Headache, fatigue, fuzziness, lazy. It lasted all afternoon until after dinner.
What do you wish you had for dinner?Fried Shrimp po-boy. I enjoyed the avocado salad we had for dinner, but would have loved to have some cheese on it!
Any frugal wins today?I did some price comparison for my upcoming Professional Engineer exam study guides. Found a way to save about $200 on the necessary books. We went and tried a new free workout! It was a free running group that meets up once a week at a local track. Unfortunately we didn’t get to enjoy the free beer after the run.

Day 3

First working day of Whole30. Thankfully no cupcakes in the break room, but I did miss out on Mexican food for the new intern’s first day.  How did the mister’s day go? See his afternoon update below. He later reported he needed three cups of coffee to make it through the work day (with no cream)    😦

I’m right there with him though, and thirsty, SO thirsty.  Why am I so thirsty? I couldn’t get enough to eat or drink today. Despite our hunger, tiredness, and thirst we both made it to workout after work.  We enjoyed a night off of cooking while eating leftovers.

I reviewed the Whole30 Timeline today – it appears as if we made it through “the hangover” stay tuned for “Kill all the things” for days 4-5.

Day 2

A lazy Sunday at home was perfect for Day 2. We relaxed at home and did some meal prep for the week. P smoked an amazing pulled pork that we plan to use for a few different recipes this week. We finished our show on Netflix and even got all the laundry washed and folded! 🙂

How are you feeling today?Good. I feel pretty great today!
Biggest Temptation?I’m in desperate need of haircut. I have been eyeing a fancy men’s only hair salon. Luckily they were closed, or I might have ended up spending $40 on what I usually pay $15 for and couldn’t have even enjoyed the free beer. Being home, I find it impossible not to snack. I went searching for my favorite pita chips, but instead I had a handful of cashews!
Any financial wins or savings? No, but I reviewed locations and quantities of our excess cash and developed an investment plan for it. Not particularly, but reviewing last months expenses together was a great reminder of our need for a reset.
Favorite meal?Dinner- Pulled pork with mashed sweet potatoes and pickles. I’m really excited about the breakfast I prepped for the week!

Can’t wait to eat left overs tomorrow!

Day 1

We made it through Day 1 – it didn’t go exactly as planned, but we made it! I won’t bore y’all with a long article everyday but just a few questions and answers from both us about our day.

How do you feel today?TiredExcited and motivated, and a little grumpy.
Favorite meal today?Crusted ChickenCrusted Chicken

Biggest temptation (food or purchase)?Creamer in my coffeePretty much every thing non-approved in the grocery store. We probably should’ve eaten more before grocery shopping.
How did you save money today?Didn’t do all of the grocery shopping at Whole Foods (aka whole paycheck.)Used my rolled over ClassPass credits, stayed in and played darts at home (while drinking LaCroix instead of beer).
How do you feel about the rest of Whole30?Got past a lot of my mental anxiety while preparing, this might not be so bad. Motivated and excited for results.
My food photography leaves a lot to be desired.

Not a bad first day – we had hoped to grocery shop last night, but instead decided to spend our last night eating BBQ and drinking. Have we mentioned we needed a reset? Today we also performed our last weigh-ins, then P hid the scale! I went and did a before Fit3D scan to capture my measurements. We deleted the Personal Capital app from our phones and iPad and lastly took those dreaded before photos – which we plan to share when we have the after photos for comparison.

You’re doing what? Why?

I’m sure we will hear this a lot this month, “You’re doing what? Why?” Well  I’ve decided to call it Junkless June, mostly because I couldn’t come up with anything better to call it but in short we are using June as a hard reset for both our bodies and our finances. We will be completing Whole30 as well as a “financial reset” to get back to the basics and to focus on a future of food and financial freedom.

We are the Wierzbas, we are newlyweds living in a new town in need of a slowdown. We got married in September, accepted a job November, and moved to a new city in February. The first 8 months of our marriage have been packed full of change and excitement, but we have decided to spend this month slowing down and getting back to the basics.

Can you guess where we moved to?

Since the wedding, and even more since moving we have really started to slip on our good habits towards financial freedom and food freedom. We have moved to a city with amazing food and so many fun festivals and activities. Living in such a fun place makes it SO easy to let our focus slip. We hope this month will help us reestablish our relationship with food and spending.

Have you ever noticed how similar dieting and budgeting are? One of the biggest similarities for me is that they just don’t feel sustainable and the “treat yourself” mentality always sends me spiraling for failure. I love Melissa Hartwig’s simple solution to stop dieting in her book Food Freedom:

  • Step 1: Reset
  • Step 2: Enjoy your food freedom
  • Step 3: Acknowledge when you’re starting to slip and repeat as needed.

What I love the most about this solution is how applicable it is to all things in life, especially saving money. We are currently in Step 3 with both our food and our finances and June will be back to Step 1, our reset. I also love the acceptance that perfection is not reality, shit happens and you can never prepare perfectly for it. We are excited to share this reset with you. We will share our journey, our results, and most importantly our struggles  – because perfection is a false reality.

The Rules

Food

For our bodies we will be following the guidelines already established by Whole30. There are so many great resources to learn more about Whole30, but here’s a quick rundown.

  • No added sugar
  • No alcohol
  • No grains
  • No legumes
  • No dairy
  • No preservatives
  • No weighing or measuring.

This isn’t our first Whole30, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be tough as hell. I am already missing cheese and crackers just thinking about it.

Finances

A financial reset will look different for everyone, but here are the rules we established for ours.

  • Limit of $40/week on entertainment.
    • We also want to use June as a time to explore our new town. Things cost money, we will look for free things to do, but we have decided to allocate $40/week for some form of entertainment.

  • No logging into personal capital.
    • If you haven’t tried Personal Capital, it is amazing! So amazing that I have gotten into a horrible habit of logging into it everyday, sometimes multiple times a day.   This is my equivalent rule to Whole30’s rule of no weighing. The fluctuations in the stock market and regular expenses can lead to the same emotions as the fluctuations on the scale. These emotions can ultimately lead to poor choices.
    • But Personal Capital is a great tool – if you don’t have it yet, click here to sign up! It is a fantastic tool for tracking your finances, your net worth and your financial progress. For the reasons explained above I would caution to limit the amount of times your log in. Depending on what all you are using it for a monthly or quarterly log-on should be sufficient.
  • No traveling, even if using points.
    • We earned a lot of credit card points while planning our wedding by “travel hacking” basically opening multiple credit cards and earning the large sign on bonus. Travel rewards are great but the reality is even when you use points to book flights and or hotels traveling is not cheap. We learned this lesson in April and May after taking 4 trips in two months, using mostly points but still spending a large fraction our income on travel.

  • No shopping – We are following Cait Flander’s shopping ban rules for this one. No shopping with the following exceptions.
    • groceries and basic kitchen supplies (plastic wrap, tin foil, etc.)
    • basic cosmetics (like eyeliner and mascara, but only after I run out)
    • toiletries (toothpaste, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.)
    • cleaning products (namely laundry detergent)
    • gifts for others
  • When necessary expenses do arrive, try to utilize gift cards we already have.
    • How many gift cards do you never use? We have a huge stack of them from wedding gifts that we always forget about.
  • Simplify finances. This one will look different for everyone but the easier it is to understand where your money is going to the more successful you’ll be in saving.
    • Close individual checking accounts
    • Merge retirement accounts from previous employers
    • Simplify financial tracking sheet
    • Establish monthly system for paying bills and investing extra.
  • Review and reduce unnecessary recurrent spending.
    • I’m a sucker for a good subscription, I once subscribed to have 3 new pairs of panties shipped to my house every month. Subscriptions are fun, but honestly most of them are less fun and no longer useful after the first 3 months, maybe less. I mean how many pairs of panties does one actually need? How many subscriptions do you forget to cancel even though you are no longer benefiting from them. During June will review all recurrent charges, decide if we are truly using them or benefiting from them, and cancel if we aren’t.

We will be sharing updates throughout the month. Updates will include our favorite recipes, our favorite free activities, our results, and our struggles. Thank you for checking in with us, we hope you learn something from our journey, gain motivation or even take the plunge with us! Junkless July anyone??
